Premature Demise

View over Independence weekend.

Today we lost a dear part of our home;  a huge tree in our front yard.  It was most likely planted when the house was built in the late ’60s.  It was healthy.  It rained down leaves in the fall and in the spring.  It provided shade and home to critters.   RIP dear tree.

Since we moved in 7 years ago, we have had trouble with the plumbing.  I even remember that the inspector flagged the slow drains before the deal was final.  As time passed, we learned that it was the city’s problem not ours.  Peridoically they would come at our emergency call to snake the pipes.  They promised to replace the pipe…  Years of this:  back-up in laundry room, call city water, they snake pipe, works better for a little while, repeat.

Excitement occurred last Thursday when the trucks rolled up and began digging up our front yard.  Finally the city was keeping their promise!  They dug a huge hole and then filled it back again.  “Couldn’t find the pipe.  Be back on Monday.”  They dug another huge hole and filled it back again.  This time I wasn’t home to ask if it was fixed.  Tuesday, they came and took the trucks away.  hmmmmm.

Wednesday brings a sign on the tree not to park anywhere near here.  Ok, they WILL be back.

Today.

A week later.

Trucks at 7:15AM.

They systematically dismantle the tree in a mere 4 hours.

Now, we wait for the water guys to show up again.  I hope they do.  Somehow flowing water pipes need to arrive to justify the premature demise of the tree…

Such a bummer…it was a beautiful tree. Why they planted these huge trees in the easement, and directly over the sewer line, I have no idea.

You said it, frets. Didn’t they give a minute of thought to the idea that trees grow nearly as extensively under the ground as they do above it?!
